Title: Just chat
Post by: Smokebender on January 31, 2009, 05:20:06 PM
So what's new? What's old? What's up? Anything goes..........lets chat.   W==(:D)==

What's new? I guess my life, if I can get it off the ground. I'm 44 years old. I left a secure job and life back on the east coast to pursue a dream I put on hold 20 years ago so as to raise my children as a single mom. My girls are grown now, with lives of their own, so I decided to take a risk. I wish to pursue my interest in the performing arts. Vancouver offers a broader range of opportunities for this type of work than Halifax and there are schools here particularily for this purpose. Mid life crisis? My faith says no. What's new with you and yours?

What you have done, and are doing sounds fantastic, bold and wonderful. So many never even start to follow a dream.      I see you making it happen, and that's what it's all about. Tell us more of this interesting dream of yours if you will.

Post by: Truthsayer on February 01, 2009, 11:56:46 PM
Where to start! My dream is to not necessarily be "famous", but to be "acknowledged". I have a wealth of talent for most venues of the arts including music/singing, acting, writing, philosophy, photography and I am an amateur astrologer/numerologist. To choose only one and follow it to the end! I need to express myself in all of them to be completely fulfilled. I can make people laugh without having to be onstage, I sing karaoke whenever I can, I use music and dance as a form of therapy to vent my emotions and keep them in proper perspective. My passion is writing poetry and philosophy. I was working toward a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy/religion, but only completed 2 years because my children were still very young and required my full time attention. Once I get settled here with my job and save some money, I want to attend a school for the performing arts, most specifically acting. One step at a time is all I can take. My life philosophy is this: If I have to work hard, blood, sweat and tears, all of my life to acquire, achieve, obtain or accomplish just ONE thing in life, "I'M GOING TO WANT TO TAKE IT WITH ME WHEN I GO". I may not have much in the way of material wealth, and may never acquire it, but I have gained a wealth of knowledge, wisdom and insight. This is something I can give freely and generously to the world, and still take it all with me when I go. That's fulfillment!

It seems you're on your way. Material wealth is over rated, and you may never be famous, but you're already a star.

You are welcome. Smokebender's are known for speaking the truth. With that in mind, let me say this.
I regard to your family or just anyone for that matter, everyone is crazy. Everyone. It's just a matter of degree.  ~D~

Thank you. I needed that. Now if I can only convince my family. They all think I'm crazy! Enough about me. How about yourself? You have me intrigued, but your hiding your secrets. (BD)
I was born in the 50's to non smokebending parents. My Yankee Father and my southern bell Mother raised me well and my childhood was bliss. Every year at Christmas the family would travel to the deep south, and to this day I miss hearing the words "Yall want some grits with that bacon?" and "don't make me stop this car!" Life was good, and still is.

As a young man I became interested in smokebending. I was luckly to find, and learn from a master. He also taught me how to cook meat on a stick, but that's another story. As I traveled the land doing wildlife and landscape photography, I was able to prefect my smokebending skills. I love the outdoors and all mother nature and the Great Spirit have given us.

There is a very fine line between genius and insanity. Its name is "faith".
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 03, 2009, 01:58:34 AM
You enjoy the great outdoors too? What a coincidence! so do I. You might think this a bit strange, but I've always wanted to and still dream of one day living in a treehouse. If there is ever a point in my life when I do acquire some material rewards for my hard work, I want to purchase a few acres of land, maybe on the Queen Charlotte Islands or overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and build a modern day "tree" house. My house will be elevated about 30 feet above the ground, within a grove of evergreen and oak. It will be supported by the surrounding trees, overlooking the ocean. The nearest town will be about ten kilometres away, (not too far that I can't get there by bicycle). My house will have a skylight ceiling so I can view the universe with or without a telescope. (I love stars and the constellations).
It would seem that I already have the blueprints drawn up, but only in my imagination. But hey, if it can be imagined, then anything is possible.

By the way, you say smokebenders are known for telling the truth. Is smokebending a form of integrity? Or maybe an alternative righteous path? You will need to elaborate to me a bit about exactly what a smokebender is. I keep envisioning an Indian Chief blowing smoke rings with his pipe. Am I close? [peace]

Some would think a tree house strange, but I do not. If fact it seems like a lovely way to live. I've seen examples on the web that were works of art. Yes I have looked into them. Living off the grid is one of my dreams. I enjoy the tv show Crusoe for those very reasons, off the grid tree house, a dream to me and a goal for you. Make it happen. You can do it.

Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 03, 2009, 11:42:41 PM
The info I googled says a "smoke bender" is a fictional device that a member of a group sends a "new" member around a campground in search of, so as to get rid of the New member for a while. Your hesitance to reveal the meaning of smokebender may be assumed to enhance my curiosity so I can search for it myself. It worked! (;D)b  The info I found also associates it with left handedness, calling it a "left handed smokebender". No worries if I'm misunderstood, I hope.  *:)---x*

Now I understand. You looked up smoke bender. I am Smokebender. Not the same and I'm right handed.

Back to you if I may. I was wondering what type of work you did before the long bus trip began.
I'm new to this whole forum thing so if that's a question that is out of line forgive me.

Before my trip I worked as a security guard. The best part of being a uniformed guard was getting free tickets to rock concerts and other cultural events even if all I did was work. I met a lot of prominent and presigious people in the arts and entertainment industry.  ((:o))

The best I've seen and heard while working was the Rolling Stones on the Halifax Commons. Alice Cooper opened for them. It was an outside concert and it rained most of the evening. The concert was still a blast.

d(BD)b You guesster chester! My last three jobs required me to work back shifts. As a guard, many of my shifts were twelve hour shifts. I've grown accustomed to the peace of the late nights. It's 11:50pm where I am now. That is Pacific Standard Time.

The only time I ever see smoke bend is when it's coming from the smoke stack of a power plant or other industry. It seems to do it with help from the wind. Normally, smoke travels in swirls.

I used to say that nothing impresses me and it usually takes alot to impress me. But when I made the trip through the Canadian Rockies just a little over a month ago, I can honestly say, I was impressed! I have never seen such beauty and greatness in landscape except in pictures. It was amazing!

That's cute. Actually I haven't gone to church yet. I think I'll bypass the religious board and take this post straight to the writing and poetry board. Although it deals with matters of the Bible, it is more of a philosophical essay than a topic for "discussion". Of course, discussion is always welcome.

Philosophical writing is my passion.

I don't want you to go. Not to be rude to you, but well it could be....... how should I put this?

I'll need to know where you intend to hunt before I can ask anyone. (I'm sure they'll ask me.) I'm thinking my brother may want to go. He lives in North British columbia, close to the yukon border. I'm not a hunter of animals for sport or anything else. Although I love to fish. Thanx for asking. Give me the location and I'll ask my brother if he would like to go and if he can go.

If you're joking then you got me good. If not I'm sorry because my offer was a joke. See the thing is, Dick Chaney shot this guy, his friend in the face. He had some beer for lunch and went hunting and shot his friend right in the face. Here I was thinking I had this funny joke for ya and well it looks like I shot myself in the foot. Never mind. I'm sorry lets talk fishing. I bet you have a good fishing story to tell.

I changed my mind again about where I should post my essay. I put it on the religion board. It was better suited to it in content.
I did read what you posted there. Well done to say the least.   (BD)b

Do you ever read the religious discussion board? I've posted my thoughts on that board. I'd like to post more on that board, but I don't want to begin a controversy.

We always say that this is one of the rare boards where you can post about politics and religion and not get in trouble.  Post away.  Controversy is fine.  It is always fulfilling to me when discussing religion or beliefs to find those things that we may have in common in rejoice in them.

Nothing wild ever occurred with me while fishing, but I do have a tale of sentimental value.

When I was about 5 years old, my father took me fishing at the small brook which bordered our property. The fish were brook trout, but they were tiny. He taught me everything about fishing including how to dig worms. We caught about ten fish between us. When we got home, I had to help him clean the fish. (Not something I was enthused to do), but; "It comes as part of the chore", as my father always said. We cleaned them then I had the honor of helping my mother cook them for dinner. The best feed of fish I've ever eaten. (then I was introduced to lobster)... No, I've never been lobster fishing.
How about you? Catch any fish in Wawa?
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Smokebender on February 07, 2009, 12:03:49 AM
Wawa was a trip I took with my Father and two of my friends some forty years ago. We had a good time, but I don't recall many fish. I was not much of a fisherman back then. Still, it's always great to travel north. Your story was nice. Fishing with Dad, good times for all.

I grew up in the rural countryside off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. I spent most of my childhood connecting with nature. My brothers never really included me in their games and escapades, (unless I was willing to be a pawn for them) and I had no sisters. I love trees and I was quite the tomboy. Even as a child I tried to build a treehouse. I love to climb trees, I was always in one. I spent much time at a pond on our property, playing with the frogs and toads. I remember sleeping outside under the stars in the summers, taking long walks along the shore collecting barnacles, shells and baby crabs. I enjoyed splattering jelly fish on the rocks. My family went camping every summer. Childhood for me was amazing! And then, I woke up.

The dream ended.

The carefreeness of childhood is just that, carefree, no responsibilities or decisions to make. Parents provide the opportunities, you make the best of them. The responsibilities that await you as an adult are unexpected, despite how prepared for it you think you are. "Fly or die" said the mother bird to its offspring as she pushed it from the nest.

There is a well known Canadian author that shares your name. Did you know that?
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 07, 2009, 01:30:14 AM
Yes, I do know that. In Montreal, am I correct? I think she's also a therapist of some sort. Unless your thinking of "Lucy Maud Montgomery" who wrote the Anne of Green Gables series.

There is an interesting story behind my name. (I think it's interesting). I'll tell it if you'd like to hear it.

I was not thinking of Montgomery. So, you are correct and yes I would like to hear your story. Shoot.
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 07, 2009, 02:12:10 AM
This will be a long one as I need to start at the beginning

In October of 2003 I had a dream which inspired me to change the use of my name. On the surface this dream made absolutely no sense, but when I finally figured out what it was telling me, it made so much sense, it blew my mind! Here is my dream:

I dreamt that I held the winning ticket to a "22 million dollar lottery". When I phoned the lottery place (in my dream) to declare myself the winner, a voice on the other end asked me what my name was. I told him, "Cindy" MacDonald. At the time, that was who I was. He said; "sorry, but that is the wrong name! At this point, I awoke.

I wasn't only confused when I woke up, I was pissed! Like, "whaddya mean I have the wrong name?! I'm holding the "winning ticket" in my hand, but you won't give me my winnings caus' you don't like my name??!!" Go figure!
It made no sense at all. I know that if you win a lottery in reality that they will ask for your name, but they don't hold it against you!
This was a direct communication from the universe. I knew there was some logic in it somewhere and I was going to find it. I pondered this dream for weeks trying to make some sense of it. I only discovered what it was telling me when I applied it to the divine art of numerology.

I was given the name "Lucinda" at birth, but I was known to my friends, family and acquaintances all of my life as "Cindy". Numerologically, it didn't matter which name I chose to use as my identity as both of the names "Lucinda MacDonald" and "Cindy MacDonald" hold the exact same number influence. The influence of the number "5".

My date of birth holds the influence to master number "11". By using these two different influences as my major guiding influence in life, I created the chaos, disorder, confusion and disillusionment that followed me throughout my life.

The only other alternative name within the name Lucinda that I could have used in life is "Lucy". I always knew that Lucy was there as an option, but I never used it because I never liked it. I was named after my grandmother who's name was "Lucinda", but she was known as "Lucy". To me, at my young, naive age, "Lucy" sounded so old ladyish so I never used it. I thought about that as I pondered my dream. For the first time in my life, I applied the name "Lucy MacDonald" to numerology. When I worked it out, I discovered that the name holds the influence to the master number "11". Exactly the same as my birthdate.
The birthdate influence is fixed and cannot be altered, but by changing the use of my name and establishing my life and identity around the name "Lucy MacDonald", I can unleash the power of the number 11 in my name, bringing it into harmony with the 11 of my birthdate. My "22" million dollar lottery! 22 being the sum of the two 11 vibrations.

My "winnings" in this case are the reward/benefits, either spiritual, material or both, that I have been given the opportunity to obtain "through that harmony"! priceless!
The name "Lucinda" is my winning ticket as it holds the second half of the 22 vibration, which, in numerology, is known as the soul's journey number.

Applying this concept to my dream, I have held that "winning combination" all of my life within the name Lucinda, but I couldn't "cash in" on it because I was using "Cindy" and not "Lucy". As the voice in my dream clearly stated; "Sorry, but that is the wrong name!"
I knew without a doubt in my mind, what I needed to do and so began the process of changing the use of my name to "Lucy". Long story I know, but I enjoy telling it.

I've been hoping to get a chance to ask you about your country's health care. Here in the states the care is great and the cost is greatest. Some folks lose their homes just because they became ill. Do you like your system?
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 07, 2009, 02:31:14 AM
I love the health care system in Canada. Our health care is subsidized by the government. It doesn't matter how great your health problems, your care by your GP, specialist, hospital stay, it is all paid for by the government as long as you have a health care card for the province you live in, and are a Canadian Citizen. You need to pay for your own medications unless you have a medical insurance plan of your own or through work. It works for me anyway. I have never heard of anyone in Canada losing their home because they can't afford medical care. Many Canadians take this system for granted and complain about not receiving enough care, but those are the ungrateful.

The scenery is breathtaking. Not quite "in" the rockies, but the mountains are in closeup view. Some sections of the greater Vancouver area are located on the mountains. The past few days I Have been feeling "off", just not myself. I have an on and off fever, like hot then cold, I feel slightly nauseated, but not to the point of vomiting. I also have the shakes on and off. Flu like symptoms but not a full fledged flu. It's not often that I get sick. Last time I had a full flu was eight- ten years ago. I'll stick it out for the rest of the week and if it doesn't clear up by itself I'll see a doctor.

I've been planning an expedition with the guys in my group. Winter is a good time to plan. This is a first trip for us as a group so we have lots to talk over. Planning is half the fun sometimes. This time that remains to be seen. It's a good bunch.
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 08, 2009, 11:35:31 PM
Hope you plan your expedition wisely. "Be prepared".

Regarding your question about vitamins, no I don't take vitamins except what is in the fruits, veggies and other foods I eat. I don't believe in taking pills when there are other alternatives. I don't even take tylenol or other pain medicine for headaches. Nothing a good rest can't handle. I have never had a flu shot. My doctor asks me every year. I tell him that if I was meant to receive a shot of the flu virus, (which is exactly what a flu shot is), that I am sure it will find me all by itself!

I believe our natural immune system was given for a purpose. It cannot serve us properly if we continue to break it down with synthetic toxins. There is a reason children get the mumps, measles and chicken pox, or at least they did when I was growing up. Once you get them, you cannot get them again. Your body is now "immune" to it. This strengthens the immune system and prepares it for adulthood. No continued treatments of vaccines or innoculations.
I also believe that the common cold and flu viruses are God's gift to mankind. When your immune system is allowed to fight these viruses without the aid of synthetics, it strengthens the immune system. In the long run you become totally immune to those viruses. What I have now is not a full fledge flu. It is what I call a "touch up".

I gotta tell ya, while I was taking the ferry across the inlet from North Vancouver to Downtown Vancouver, it felt so much like being in Halifax! The sameness of scenery is ironic. I think my "illness" just might be homesickness!

It sure could be homesickness. Taking the ferry sounds nice. Strange here all of a sudden, it's raining and the power just went out twice. Ok I'm back.

Ashley rules! That's what she always says!

The birthdate is the destiny number. Yours is the number three. Three represents the trinity. It is the number of communication, and also relates to expansiveness through life experience. It is a lucky number and associated with money and good fortune. On the positive side, three possesses wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Negatively it can lead to pessimism, foolhardiness and risky business, usually unnecessarily.

Post by: Smokebender on February 10, 2009, 08:52:18 PM
Years ago I found myself at the shore of Lake Michigan in the dead of winter. You guess it, we went out on the ice. I've never liked being on ice, still away we went. At the edge we looked over and down. Way down and under us was nothing but air. The fear at that moment, seeing ice bolders smashing back and forth, knowing if one fell in it was sure death is something I will never forget. We backed off slowly and that was the last time ever on the ice for me.
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 10, 2009, 08:59:39 PM
Ice is scary. I've always had fond memories of ice skating on a neighbors manmade pond. He also built a small cabin with a wood stove in it for us kids who took advantage of the glory of winter. But I have heard some horror stories of people gone ice fishing and falling through the ice. Once under the ice, it is rare that one can resurface. Very scary indeed.

Do you drink a lot of coffee? I was always a diet pepsi freak up until the age of 36. Someone introduced me to cappachino and that is when I started drinking coffee. I used to drink five cups per day, but then I would get caffeine hangovers. It wipes my energy right out. I try to limit myself to two cups per day.

I begain drinking coffee at about age forty and then only in the winter. Now I enjoy it year round, but consume much less in the summer.

Has the coverse lost it's appeal already? Come on, there must be more! Let's talk about the concept of global warming. I know Americans don't take it as seriously as Canadians. Do you recycle, compost?
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Smokebender on February 11, 2009, 04:52:12 PM
Very good topic, and no the appeal remains.

Global warming is very real to me. I take it seriously. As I type this it's raining here in Michigan. Raining in Feb. As we all know it should be snow. Yesterday the temp was 61f and was the warmest Feb day ever recorded in Michigan. Last night 15 people died due to weather here in the USA. It's real all right and we better do something soon. I do everything in my power to fight it, but I see little from others in my area. Now is the time to take action before it's to late, but do people really care?
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 11, 2009, 05:13:30 PM
Yes, it is time to take action. When I build my treehouse it will be powered by the sun. (Solar panels). People and their governments know that solar panels and wind turbines work, and it beats me why they are not trying to perfect them and make them available to everyone in every community. Yes, they are costly, but so is oil, coal, and nuclear generated electricity, especially now in this global recession. But once installed, you may never need to receive a monthly bill from the hydro company. They are also clean and reusable.

Post by: Truthsayer on February 11, 2009, 07:57:57 PM
How bad is the impact of global warming in the USA other than the weather patterns? Here the weather is confusing the animals. The warmth of the winters lately have the squirrels out and about in late December and January. Ducks, geese and other birds native to Canada don't fly south for winter like they used to. Bees are searching for nectar in Mid November!  It's crazy.

I have to comment.  I HATE thieves and liars.  I have come to the conculusion that all thieves are liars and all liars are thieves.  They have no use on this planet.  By the way, this doesn't apply to fishermen.  They don't lie, they simply tell us the truth as they remember it.  We are getting ready to leave for the weekend.  See you guys next Monday.

Smoke,

Your cup will be delivered to you when we get the cups from the manufacturer.  Your poll that you created was the 20th thread that you started and that is the rule.  Start 20 threads and get a cup.  Of course, some of the threads were started to ask for a cup, if I remember.  All in fun and we appreciate your time here and the work you have done on the bigfoot forum.  You had a cup coming simply because you are a moderator.  Hang in there, little buckaroo.  Your cup will soon be in your hand and you will be able to caffeinate yourself with style.

I'll get to your post in a bit. For now do you know what you've done? You won by posting the 1000th post.    ((:o))

Huh?...Who?...when?...where?...How?....What did I win? A trip to Vegas?  OOOOOOO
You need a passport to go to Vegas. It's to damn hot there anyway. Sass will tell us what you have won.

Of course, a  (*)MP(*)  would be nice also. I know, I know, I can't have it all, (for free anyway). I'll take what I get and cherish it. Thanks.

Many photographers make posters of their work and sell them at Kiosks in the malls. How about selling to a company who makes calanders? There are many venues where a good photographer can sell his work. Anything holding you back?

I was wondering, do you recall the power outage of 2003?  Were you without power at that time?
Title: Re: Just chat
Post by: Truthsayer on February 13, 2009, 07:42:03 PM
The only power outage in 2003 that I remember is when Hurricane Juan came up the east coast and hit Halifax head on. No one was prepared for it. Many people were without power for seven or more days, but I was unscathed by it. Luckily, i only lost power for a couple of hours. I was in bed when it happened. The power came on before I awoke. I only know I lost power for a bit because the digital clock in my bedroom was blinking off and on. Much of the damage done by Juan was up the coast a bit fr Halifax, where it's not as sheltered.

Whoever designed and engineered the city of Halifax was a genius. Halifax is built on a hill and sheltered by the mountains. Regardless of how much it rains or storms, Halifax will never flood. Water rolls off the hill and right into the harbour.

38 films were made here in Michigan last year. It's the new Hollywood says Clint Eastwood and many others. Michigan gives the movie makers a 42% kick back on each film made here. It's all about the money honey. Maybe it's time for a passport? At least keep your eye on what happens here.

I believe you. Entertainment tonight says more movies are shot in Vancouver that in Los Angeles. I'll exhaust all my resources here first, and if there is nothing here for me, I'll acquire a passport. I'm still getting over the bus lag from my last long distance travels.

Sadly, I do not, but they are very beautiful. And very expensive. They are worn mainly as Capes, by the First Nations tribes. That's another thing I gotta check out this summer. The First Nations heritage is more prominent on the west coast than it is on the east coast. The Museums will be a place to start. There is nothing more beautiful and natural than Native art.

Chimo is a word I learned of only yesterday. Do you know it? Is it still used at all? Does it mean more than just hello?

In all honesty I have never heard the expression until you brought it to my attention. I'm not too up to date on the language of the western and Northern Canadian First Nations. In the east there are the Miq' Maq (Mic Mac) First Nations tribes. The language is slightly different, but even in that language I am not knowledgeable. It brings to mind the Hawaiian word "Aloha" which means both hello and....farewell? W==(:D)==

I got lucky darlin'!  =:D

I went to the website of my most recent employer back in Halifax, and discovered that they have recently opened an office in Vancouver! They put in a bid to do security for the 2010 Olympics. I have a very good letter of reference from my supervisor at that company. I'll have no problem getting re-employed with them. Vancouver arts and entertainment, here I come! My first role, security guard.

Once I am employed I can then save some funds to go back to school. Once through the introduction, which I pay for myself, I can then apply for a student loan for the more intensive courses. d(BD)b

I think your friends are right. Yes, I did read it and it was very nice. One of the best all time stories is "The Swiss Family Robinson" Why? It's the tree house for one thing. And freedom. Write it, make it yours, people will like it or not. What it does for you is the main thing as you already know. It could help you stay clean and on a forward path. Most people would not care to be on their way up a tree. It's what you want that counts. Climb, and if you fall, Climb again.

Smoke,

If you are getting a blue screen when you boot-up, follow this procedure.  The first or second screen will ask you if you want to boot from menu, I think is what it asks.  Normally you have to hit F-10.  But simply hit the key they ask you for.  Then when the menu comes up, use the arrow keys to scroll down to "Boot from Hard Disc."  Choose that option and continue the boot.  This will normalize the boot-up and repair any errant files you may have.  Hope it works.  If you can't make sense of it, call me.

Mick

Nothing much really. I just got settled into my new place over the weekend. Yeah, that's right. Truthsayer's on the move again. ::D

I'm still sharing my accomodations but now I'm sharing a five bedroom house with people who are more my age. I have my own room and private entrance though so I don't disturb anyone. The Owner of the house is a contractor! How ironic is that? Maybe I found the person who will build my treehouse for me sometime down the road. ~D~

I'm doing well. I need to hire the geek guy full time. Between cell phones and the pc. Having the tools and not be able to put them to full use makes me feel like I'm missing out. Just dropped my truck off for repairs. Getting ready for the big outing next month. Lots to do in regard to that. I'm ready for spring! In fact I'm past ready for spring. Cabin fever I guess.

I've been taking some time out for me. Got to get my own head cleared. I've been here almost three months, but other than having a place to live, nothing else is getting done. I blame it on the weather, but there are other factors to consider. I've got to have a clear vision of how to achieve the next step, which is finding a job. Networking is important, but my introverted self keeps backing down. I've never been one to just dive into the pool. If I do that, I might crack my skull, if ya know what I mean. :-\  I go into the water one toe at a time. I need to have a serious talk with myself.

And how was your week? [peace]

Ah, Seahunt, with Mike Nelson, or was it Lloyd Douglas.  As a kid, I couldn't ever keep straight what the character's name was and what the actor's name was.  And of course, Lloyd Douglas was Michael Douglas' father and he also has played in so many movies, one off the top of my head is one of my favorite Tom Hanks films, Joe vs the Volcano.  Just a little early morning trivia.

The Sea Hunt main character's name was Mike Nelson, play by Loyd Bridges. Tarzan and Mike Nelson were all that for me as a kid.

Oops, Lloyd Douglas was an author that wrote The Robe and Lloyd Bridges was the father of Jeff and Beau Bridges and if I don't get it right this time, just laugh behind my back, please.

It's interesting that you bring this up Truthsayer.  I have been out of a steady job since Nov. '07.  I have been working on and off for retail, but I can't seem to fit in anywhere.  When the "management" starts in treating their employees cruddy (and they always seem to do that) the loudmouth Texan in me starts going.  Ask Mick, he's witnessed me do this before.   ;)  I'm good at IT, and even Microsoft certified (or is it certifiable? ~D~ ) but all the IT jobs have gone over to India (I have nothing against Indians, but American jobs need to stay in America).  No kidding, ever called the Microsoft help line lately?!

So, I've been looking into a life-long dream of my own.  When I was a teenager (I'm 47) I used to build models and draw and other creative stuff.  I used to build some really intricately detailed models.  My dad always tried to discourage me from doing anything creative, saying "You'll never make any money doing anything like that."  He even went through my room and destroyed my models while I was out one time.

So, anyway, my dream back then was to go to California and to build miniatures for the movies.  Of course, I never told my dad that I wanted to do that, I knew what he'd say.  Still, there was that little voice in my head telling me not to try it, that I would just end up a failure and a bum.

So, because of my troubles I've gotten with the Virginia Dept. of Veterans Affairs, who are putting out a lot of money to get people off of unemployment, and looking into getting myself financed to go to this school called DAVE School. (http://www.daveschool.com/).  DAVE stands for digital animation and visual effects.  They are down in Florida on the back lots of Universal Studios, and major studios hire through their school.  Talk about a life-long dream fulfilled!

However, nothing is final, but I have an orientation to go through the program they have to get these people educated for new careers (called WIA, I don't know why).

I don't think we're going through mid-life crisis.  I just think we're learning to love ourselves for who we are, after having loved and raised others for so long.  I've learned, especially from my wife, how to be comfortable with myself.  I've stopped letting others tell me I have to change for them.  That's why I get fired!  LOL!

Good luck on your new stage career!

Allen

Way to go!! (;D)b

I think we listened to too many other people who thought they knew what's best for us and what we needed was to listen to our own voice! Even now my family accuses me of "shirking my responsibility". To whom? What about the responsibility we have to ourselves? I'm tired of trying to mold myself into something I'm not because it fits the person they want me to be. Good luck to you on your making a dream a true.  [peace]

To answer your last question in the "Dear dogs and cats" thread, yes Smokebender, it is true.

The hotel I worked for was affiliated with the Casino next door. It was determined after an investigation that this person apparently lost all of his life savings the previous evening. Sad.
Why do these things always happen to me? I'm never the one who unexpectedly stumbles upon a bag with $100,000 dollars in it! >:(

Thanks for the empathy. That happened six years ago.

To be truthful, I've grown accustomed to death in a way. I grew up with it. My mother looked after senior citizens in our home for twenty years. When I was 16, mom and dad went to bingo and left me and my brother's girlfriend to 'look after things". One of the ladies died on this shift. We had no way of getting hold of my parents so we had to think on our feet. Talk about hysterics! We kept our cool though. Called the ambulance and let them handle things from there.
I've watched them come, got attached to them then watched them go. I grew up pretty quick.

I just began watching a new show that premiered on the history channel a few weeks back. it's called 'Ice Road truckers". That is a job that really seperates the men from the boys. These truckers have to make 1500 or more trips to Yellowknife in three months. They carry supplies to the diamond mines and other small villiages throughout the Northwest Territories. Imagine carrying tons, not including the weight of the 18 wheeler you are driving, across three hundred miles of frozen lakes in temperatures of -50 degrees. The ice they travel on is only 28 inches thick. Imagine doing all this in whiteout conditions! It's a very interesting show and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I'm geared up for summer! I've joined a few meetup groups where I can meet and socialize with people who have the same interests as me. I've applied to a couple of talent agencies looking to hire extras and I'm creating a an improvisational routine I can try out on open mic nights at the comedy clubs. It's gonna take time, but I'm planting the seeds.

It's funny, when I first got here I had no idea where to begin, now the ideas are coming faster than I can think! The key is to not take on more than I can handle.

And how was your week?

So Smoke, whatcha been up to since your camping trip? Enjoying some beautiful weather or are you guys getting what they got in some parts of the prairies and Ontario a few days ago? A foot and a half of snow!

No snow here thank God. It has been very nice here weather wise. Warmer than normal for this time of year.

I saw a show on History International the other day about Iva Toguri AKA Tokyo Rose.  It's just a compelling story about a woman who refused to stop loving the US, the land of her birth, despite the hardships that her fellow Americans put her through - she was willing to risk starvation in Japan (her ration card was revoked) during the war rather than to renounce her US citizenship!  It would make a good movie.

I agree it would make a good movie. Toward the end of the info on the link you gave, it states that she was the subject of two movies and five documentaries. Another movie is in the works. I know of one song under the title "Tokyo Rose", but I can't recall the artist.

Here's what I experienced.

I dreaded becoming 30.  I grew up with the saying "Never trust anybody over 30" and here I was becoming one of those guys.  Well, I found my 30's were a lot better than my 20's to the point you will never hear me say I would like to be in my 20's again.  I would never want to have to live those years over.

I became 40 with an heart attack.  Changed my life and I can tell you my 40's were a lot better than my 30's.

I turned 50 feeling pretty good about life.  I had been self-employed for 3 years and enjoying it and believed that since every decade in the past got better, my 50's should be good.

I turned 60 diabetic.  I remembered, though, that I met Sassafras when I was 50 and my life grew and the past 10 years were glorious.  Every decade of my life just gets better, so I entered my 60th decade with a lot of positive thoughts.  I am now 62 and ready to tell you that life just keeps getting better.  I have no idea what old age means.  Probably refers to a worn out body because my mind is better than it ever was.  My thoughts are clearer, many of my dreams are now memories and I don't worry about all the dumb stuff.

I realize that I used the word "I" a lot, but I was trying to share with you my experience with "getting older".  This could also be one of the longest "HAPPY BIRTHDAYS"  I have ever given.

warmly,

Mick

It's been quiet on the home front all weekend. Nice weather....and I thought I would never say this....too hot to do anything! What is it with us humans? We wish our winters away so as to enjoy the warmth of summer, then when summer becomes too hot we wish it were cooler. Then, after wishing our years away, we wonder where the time goes!  :)7

And how was everyone else's week?  [peace]

Our week has been good.  We spent a lot of money getting ready for the motorcycle show next week where we will be serving breakfast for 1500 bikers as well as our line of sunglasses.  We ordered 100 lbs of breakfast sausage, bought 20 dozen english muffins, a 20 lb bag of flour, another oven, lots of styrofoam dishes and cups, and other acoutrements.

The questions you asked are similar to ones asked by John Steinbeck in Cannery Row.  His had to do with why we long for freedom from a job, leisure and a stressless life and then loathe individuals that have attained these goals by simply dropping out, such as bums and drifters.  Interesting questions.

I'm having a good week here on the dental floss ranch, or the DFR as we like to call it.
It's that time of year, time to plant the floss. In the fall we cut it, wax it and put it a little
white box that we can sell uptown. By myself I don't have no boss, just me and the lonely dental floss.

Truthsayer...Glad to see you.

Yeah, the S word was used.  No choice where we live.  We just got a winter storm watch for tomorrow evening and Saturday.  They are calling for lake effect "S".  Since we live 5 blocks from Lake Michigan and one block from Lake Huron, and nothing is frozen yet, we could get a large amount in a short time.  We sometimes measure in feet in this area.  So, as horrible as it may sound to Canadians living in a tropical zone, some of us do live with the S word for many months of the year.

I've lived with the S word for most of my life, including four years in "Winterpeg", (Winnipeg). It will soon be my first year anniversary in Vancouver. Everything to the east of us is snow covered. But I'll never forget last winter when I arrived here to five feet of snow on the ground! So we aren't totally devoid of snow. Good to chat with ya again.

Sass and I are as active as our life allows.  Or sometimes as our interest allows.  We are pretty busy people, generally, with a lot of road and show time away from the computer.  We do enjoy it when we see others read the posts and bother to respond.  Actually, the City gets quite a few readers everyday. Many of these come from searches and once they have entered the City, the browse through a lot of varied topics.  If you want your thoughts read, use the Misfit City Forum to post them on. I guess we should devise some sort of advertising/banner program and get rich.  On the other hand, it seems like such a bother.

Actually, we don't have any banners.  We have been asked to sell banners, but it doesn't really match what Sass and I are trying to do here.  So we pay for the site and the name ourselves.  Fortunately, Sass has become a web builder.  All of this and the other 8 websites we own is Sass's work.  Good job, hey?

Sass now explains to me that we actually have 8 websites and that Misfit City Forum, because of its entry page gets counted twice.  Any of the sites involved with sunglasses all eventually lead to Misfits Central.net  In the past we have also had Misfit Guy.com, misfitcentraleyewear.net, MCEyewear.net and some others we forget when we were trying to cover all the possibilities.  We do have plans for a couple of more, though.  We are in the process of developing a book wedgie to hold pages open in a book while reading and so a site for this product will be added.  Also we are pondering a site to sell nuts and coffee beans called "Nut House Cafe".  All in the works.  Below are the current URL's that we have.

It is about all we can do is try to eat healthy.  Sassafras is horribly allergic to excitotoxins and I am diabetic.  I can eat food with excitotoxins without an allergic reaction and she can eat all the sugars she wants.  In fact, she can't tolerate any of the manmade sugars such as aspartame or maltodextrin and all the others.  I try to eat one meal a day of fresh fruit and vegetables and when I do, it is usually my favorite.

It sounds like you have your hands full with your dietary needs.  I wish you well and hope we can help you if you need it.  Feel free to ask any questions concerning msg and other excitotoxins.
