Title: No traffic signs? Give me a break!

My #1 pet peeve about living in the southern US (and in general, I really do like it down here) is that laid-back Southerners tend to be so "polite," they rewrite traffic rules. On the four-lane main drag of my city's downtown area, friendly drivers sometimes come to a standstill and wave across pedestrians waiting to cross the street...which would be fine if they were the only two people for miles around. But what assurance does he have that the pedestrian won't be hit by drivers in the other three lanes, or that another motorist will won't rear-end the considerate driver who is inexplicably stopped in the middle of the block?

I'm also highly annoyed when a motorist who clearly arrived at the four-way stop ahead of me keeps waving me on. I don't like to barrel on ahead when it's not really my turn, but if I don't, people will be waiting behind us while this clown and I try to prove to each other how nice we are. "No, you go." "No, YOU go!" I can usually chuckle about these little Southern peculiarities, but for some reason, these excessively polite traffic-rule-breakers rouse my ire. Who are they to flout the law in the name of Niceness?

That's right. I'm a big, cranky Yankee.

Oh, that is rich. I love it. My wife read the post and said, "You guys could be brothers." Four way stop signs in the US, not just in the south, have become an adventure.

Other pet peeves include people that hit their brakes and start their turn before they put on their blinker light. What is that about? Is that considerate?

People that don't stop before making a right turn on a red light. That is just scarey to me.

People that go past the stop sign, speedily, before stopping. Most drivers under 40 do this and if you are approaching an intersection, it is difficult to tell if they are going to stop.

People that don't merge into traffic on the expressway. They slowly enter the expressway, causing me to move over to the other lane, if that is possible, or brake, and then they speed up and pull away from me. MERGE knucklehead and we'll all get home safe.

And many others. Get rid of the signs? How ludicrous.

As a southern driver who hates my neighbors' driving...

"non-use of blinkers"

"tailgating"

"excessive speeding"

really pisses me off  #@&%

A big one for me are the fools that break the law by passing in an intersection.

I always think "dead man driving."

I agree.  When I was young I QUICKLY learned the dangers of passing during an intersection.  These days you have to be concerned about all the a**holes on the road: Those behind you are just as likely to cause an accident as those coming at you.

I have been passed by people in 4 wheel drive pick-ups and SUVs giving me the finger for whatever reason, not noticing the intersection and the cars pulling out on the road.  NOTE: Motorcycles are the most unnoticed vehicle!   (*)MP(*) All of a sudden, they are cutting me off and placing EVERYONE in danger.  They don't realize they were the ones at fault.  They only blame me and who ever else caused them to react.  A**HOLES!!! There SHOULD be a sign for a**hole drivers. [BS]

I've avoided this topic because I don't drive, have never driven and most likely never will. (My feet carry me to most places within a three kilometre radius), otherwise I take the bus or a cab. But even as a pedestrian I guess a right to complain about some drivers. I always wait until the signs say "Walk", and wait for traffic going both ways to stop before I cross the street. Sometimes there is an a**hole who thinks he has to be somewhere that's more urgent than anyone else and runs the red lights or tries to beat the yellow one. I have been given the finger by driver's who wait as I cross the street at a crosswalk that is not an intersection. I always think; If God created the automobile then "it" would have the right of way.

I agree.  I always think does that mean the child is mentally challenged or just doesn't move very fast. I bet if I honk my horn at them, they'll speed up.

How about the sign that reads, "Deaf child in neighborhood"?  I have tried to figure out what this means to me, a driver of a car.  Should I slow down below the 45 mph posted?  Is this a deaf child that is mentally challenged?  If a child in that neighborhood runs out in front of me, should I assume that they are deaf and not blow the horn and apply the brakes instead?  Duh????
