A token of appreciation
« on: February 03, 2009, 05:04:37 PM »
I just want to say thank you to all moderators and members of this forum for being "adults". This is a place I can visit and engage in mature discussion (and debate), without topics becoming way off topic and blown out of proportion. I have left many forums because of the childish, foolish topics being discussed. What begins as a discussion about world peace ends up seeming like a Dan Savage Homosexual advice column.

Thank you all for making me feel welcome, initiating some mature topics to discuss and keeping them that way. I am home.
As God as my witness, I cannot tell a lie.  ;)

Well, I am happy you have joined us.  I find somebody willing to share ideas and thoughts using complete sentences is refreshing on the internet with all the "lol's" and "lmao's" out there.  I've enjoyed your thoughtful pieces very much.  So right back at you, there, Truthsayer. '

By the way, have you ever heard the story about the person that always says the truth and the person that always tells a lie?

I can't say that I have ever heard that story Mick, but I'm guessing they are one and the same?

A man was traveling across the land looking for the meaning of life, when he encountered two gates.  A man sat on the top of each gate.  He was told that if he entered through one of the gates all that he ever wondered about would be clear to him.  But if he entered through the other gate then he would live a life of hopelessness.  He was also told that one of the men always told the truth and he was called the "Truthsayer".  The other man always told a lie and he was called the "Naysayer".  He finally was told that he could ask one of the men one question before he chose which gate to enter.

Can you tell me what question he asked that would assure him that he would enter the land of wisdom?

That is the story and now I ask you if you can.  If you would like this to continue to be a ponderable puzzle for all the readers, then respond to me by private messenger on this forum.  If not, then share with everybody.

You say they are two "men"?

If that is the case, my question to one of them would be "Are you a man or a woman?"

Nice try.

Well, if we assume that they are obviously male, and if that question was asked of one of them, we would be able to determine which one was the Truthsayer and which one was the Naysayer.  If you asked the Truthsayer, he would say yes he was and then you would know which was which.  The same situation would occur if you asked the Naysayer the same question, as he would so no he wasn't a male and again, you would know which was the Truthsayer and which was the Naysayer.  Sadly, though, you are out of questions and you still don't know which door you would have to enter to find the Land of Wisdom.

Try again, please.

How can that be so? If there are "two" gates and a man sat upon "each" gate, then the two doors can be distinguished. Because the truthsayer never tells a lie, it is also not in his nature to "mislead". He would definitely be sitting atop his respective gate, which leads to the land of "truth".

Too many assumptions.  The only condition to the exercise is that you are allowed to ask one question of one of the individuals.  One will always tell the truth and one will always tell a lie.  Your whole life will is dependent on whether you choose the correct gate.  There is no need to make assumptions that can not be proven. Besides think what is at risk.  Ask the right question and you will be guaranteed a life of knowledge and comfort.  Chose wrong and live in hopelessness.  You must be careful when you chose the question. There is only one that will guarantee you success.

That's the beauty of individuality. We all think differently and handle problems differently. I can see many ways around this one, but you can only see one. To you it is the right one, but to me it places a boundary on the unlimited creative solutions. I'll stick with my original question and follow the truthsayer wherever he goes. There's always room for another's opinion.

Well, that seems quite naive.  You can trust the Truthsayer to tell you the truth, but you haven't asked him which gate represents the Land of Wisdom and Joy and since you are only allowed one question, you have already asked him one that didn't help you find which gate is the correct one.  You might just as well asked him his shoe size, which, by the way, he would have truthfully told you.

This is a problem  ??? in logic and it is tricky  :)7 but solvable.  Simply throwing up your arms [topicsucks] and saying you have your own  solution and I have mine is not an answer;  it is a cop out.  I will give you the answer [(:TEHE)] if you like with a personal message.  If you choose not to learn the solution to the problem, then so be it, but it is your choice.

Care to try again?

Yes Mick, please give me the answer if it will end this farce. In regards to the original intent of which I began this topic, I now need to make an exception. Anyone got a tylenol?

I remember this riddle in high school.  The same possible question of gender arose back then which was solved by the acceptance that the two persons were twins and looked like a male and a female - a "she-male" per say - two men with tits or two females with beards.  So, the riddle back then would have eliminated the question of gender because no one would have been able to identify the gender of the twins.

I know that Mick sent the answer out to both Truthsayer and Smokebender, but I thought I would add to the mystery of the riddle for others who would like to continue with questions.

____________

Truthsayer,

I am pleased to hear you are at home with us MisFiTs. We are not conventional or conformers.  We are not going to "fit in" among the populous.  We are different, unique, and ourselves.  We have little rules - No Spam is a must!! and keep it clean for everyone.  We are not perfect, we are triers.  Concerning topics now, I can't say we will NEVER go off topic since we aren't sticklers for a lot of rules, but we will generally keep the topic close to the original theme.  Again, we are triers.

So, I hope you remain at home here forever and ever, Truthsayer.  I hope everyone finds themselves at home here at the City.
