Title: Outback Steakhouse
Post by: Carolyn on May 05, 2012, 06:32:35 AM
I'm glad I found this forum!
We live outside of the USA and will be traveling there next week.
The kids and I love Outback Steakhouse, but my husband gets migraines from MSG (he's tolerant with a small amount).
Does anyone know of any safe items at this restaurant? It 'claims' to be mostly free of MSG.
Thanks all for any help. It will be our first trip in a long time and I'd hate to ruin it.

If you chose to eat at any of the chain steak houses, your husband has to be very careful.  They all use spicing and most contain msg and other excititotoxins.  Most of the steaks have been marinated or have a rub added. Remember, if you and your kids "love" it, they almost assuredly use flavor enhancers.  Your husband needs to ask for a steak that is not spiced or marinated.  Also the salad has to be chopped from a head of lettuce not from a bag and the dressing should no more than vinegar and oil since most salad dressings contain flavor enhancers such as msg or hydrolysed protein or autolyzed yeast or maltodextrin (a man made sweetener) and other items you will find onthe list of things to avoid found on this forum.

I would like to add, though only your husband is suffering from msg, you and your children are losing brain cells everytime you take a bite.

Anymore questions, let us know.  We'll do the best we to answer them

My husband wrote the previous message using a smartphone while logged in as me.  I thought I would post a follow-up message also, so I thought I would clarify this since it looks like I am posting again.

When Outback Steakhouse was first introduced to the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, I did go there a few times back when I didn't know I had an MSG allergy.  I remember having their famous french fries with a ton of seasoning and spices.  I know that I order other meals there, but time as transpired so that I don't remember any other details.  Though I can't say I know that I got sick from eating there, I do remember not going there after a while, which is what I did back then before I knew I was allergic to excitotoxins.

If I went back there again, for a salad, I would order vinegar and oil, like Mick suggested (no croutons), if they chop their own lettuce from heads (no bag lettuce).  Cottage cheese works for me, if this is not the case.  And no seasoning on the meat for the main course.

I hope our posts help you.

Warmly,
Sass

Well, we're back from our trip, and I have to say, it was success. We ate at a local sports bar, and I learned from you guys to ask If the steak was marinated. It wasn't, and it was great. We did take our chances at an Outback Steakhouse. Stayed away from anything with Parmesan, etc. Again, success. Hubby tried everything we ordered. Either they didn't have anything with MSG, or they did, but in low enough levels where his body could tolerate it. Thanks for all the tips.

Carolyn,

So happy to hear all went well.  The advice we gave you is just a little of the questions we go through when we eat at a new restaurant.  If your husband continues to get migraines, let us know and maybe we can, together, find the culprits causing them.
