Chile Earthquake... Shortened Days and Altered Axis
« on: March 02, 2010, 04:27:02 PM »
I seen this article and I thought it was interesting conversation.  It states most earthquakes alter the days and axis of the earth, so the Chilean earthquake is nothing different.  The knowledge that earthquakes do have a bearing on the changing earth isn't going to put a damper on Climate Change.  It just puts a new light onto the uncontrollable aspect of mother nature.

Food for thought.

Excerpt:

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's axis," NASA officials said in a Monday update.

The computer model used by Gross and his colleagues to determine the effects of the Chile earthquake effect also found that it should have moved Earth's figure axis by about 3 inches (8 cm or 27 milliarcseconds).

The Earth's figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis, which it spins around once every day at a speed of about 1,000 mph (1,604 kph).

The figure axis is the axis around which the Earth's mass is balanced. It is offset from the Earth's north-south axis by about 33 feet (10 meters).

Strong earthquakes have altered Earth's days and its axis in the past. The 9.1 Sumatran earthquake in 2004, which set off a deadly tsunami, should have shortened Earth's days by 6.8 microseconds and shifted its axis by about 2.76 inches (7 cm, or 2.32 milliarcseconds).

Yes, I have read something about that also in the news, except what I read says that the earthquake altered the length of the days by a macrosecond, (one millionth of a second). After the earthquake in Haiti, the media was speculating that we here on the Pacific fault line can expect to experience a major earthquake in as little a time span as one year. Three major cities on the west coast...Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco are in line to experience possible destruction. Although Seattle and San Francisco moreso than Vancouver as we are protected by Vancouver Island which acts as a reef. With the shifting of the continental plates and the two major earthquakes occurring within a month of each other, this is not something we can simply ignore.

sorry, I don't know what the heck happened earlier when I tried to post to this topic, but anyway, I'll try again.

What I meant to say is....Yes, I've also read something like this on the news, but what I understood is the the Chilean earthquake altered the length of the days by one "macrosecond', (a millionth of a second).
