The Truth About Diet Soda
from Eat This, Not That

By David Zinczenko, with Matt Goulding

We talk a lot about ''watching what we eat,'' but if you never gave a thought to what you ate and instead watched only what you drank, you could probably cut 450 calories a day out of your life. (Yes, nearly a pound of fat loss a week!) That's what a study from the University of North Carolina found. Americans today drink about 192 gallons of liquid a year—or about 2 liters a day. To put it into perspective, this is nearly twice as many calories as we did 30 years ago.

When confronted with the growing tide of calories from sweetened beverages, the first response is, “Why not just drink diet soda?” Well, for a few reasons:

Just because diet soda is low in calories doesn't mean it can't lead to weight gain.

It may have only 5 or fewer calories per serving, but emerging research suggests that consuming sugary-tasting beverages--even if they're artificially sweetened--may lead to a high preference for sweetness overall. That means sweeter (and more caloric) cereal, bread, dessert--everything.

Guzzling these drinks all day long forces out the healthy beverages you need.

Diet soda is 100 percent nutrition-free, and again, it's just as important to actively drink the good stuff as it is to avoid that bad stuff. So one diet soda a day is fine, but if you're downing five or six cans, that means you're limiting your intake of healthful beverages, particularly water and tea.

There remain some concerns over aspartame, the low-calorie chemical used to give diet sodas their flavor.

Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than sugar, and some animal research has linked consumption of high amounts of the sweetener to brain tumors and lymphoma in rodents. The FDA maintains that the sweetener is safe, but reported side effects include dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, memory loss, and mood changes. Bottom line: Diet soda does you no good, and it might just be doing you wrong.

The best way to hydrate is by drinking low-calorie, high-nutrient fluids—and avoiding belt-busting beverages like the 20 Unhealthiest Drinks in America.

To add to this post, I get emails from Natural News and just today I got this:

http://www.naturalnews.com/027758_aspartame_kidney_failure.html

Thank God I can't drink diet pop because I'm allergic to excitotoxins e.g. aspartame - major migraines.  Mick, since his introduction to diabetes, had started drinking diet pops.  Since, he has quite drinking any diet beverages because of the fact that aspartame ALWAYS causes brain lesions.  This information just adds more fuel to the fire.

Smoke,
Thanks for bring this topic back to the top again.  It is really important for people to understand that they may be (and in this case, ARE) hurting their body rather than helping it.

BTW, Water is very important!  Now, just remember to drink the full 2 liter requirement per day.  [Just read that bit if info somewhere too.]

Just one more if I may? http://www.alternet.org/story/144617/does_aspartame_cause_tumors_and_pose_cancer_risks_the_jury_is_still_out

Steve,

Not just one more, please.  As many as you can find.  I am going to include a quote out of the link you posted.

"Between 1977 and 1985, the conniving neoconservative -- a man whom even Richard Nixon dubbed a "ruthless little bastard" -- served as president of G.D. Searle, the pharmaceutical company (now part of Pfizer) that discovered the sweetness of aspartame in 1965, after a chemist heating it in a flask with methanol accidentally licked the substance from his fingers. By 1974, Searle had gotten aspartame approved for use in dry foods by the FDA, but claims of carcinogenicity from neuropathologist John Olney and anti-additive author and lawyer James Turner, as well as grand jury proceedings instituted by the Department of Justice against Searle for drug-study fraud, prevented the company from marketing the artificial sweetener."

The fact is the food industry is very dependent on artificial sweeteners and MSG and all their derivatives (Try to find something without xanthum gum, or maltodextrin, or carrageenan in it), that the preponderance of data that the industry and FDA cite are simply a collection of propaganda and skewed studies that the food industry has flooded the market.  For instance, the food industry in trying to prove the MSG does not cause headaches, used a large panel where half of the members were given food with MSG and the other half were given placebos.  The placebos had artificial sweeteners in it.  The figures show that many of the people that suffered from headaches or other symptoms when eating the MSG laden food also did with the placebos.  Of course these people were reacting to the aspartame that was in the placebos.  I believe that the "professionals" conducting these studies knew that sensitive people would react to both of these items, but they use the study to prove that MSG was not the cause of the participants headaches.  Just plain evil.

I liked that quote too. Odd that so many know it's bad and use it anyway. Others are learning slowly but surely.

Checked it out!! Thanks for the link! I have done a lot of research on Aspartame, NutraSweet, Equal, and even Splenda, and all of these fake sugars cause similar reacts as MSG and other excitotoxins.  The history of Aspartame dates back to when Ronald Reagan was President and Donald Rumsfield was the CEO of Searl and Co., the patient holders of Aspartame at that time.  NutraSweet, Equal, and Splenda, I would imagine, have similar stories.

Mick posted a topic about Formaldehyde Poisoning from Aspartame http://www.misfitcityforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=292.0  And you might want to check out these other symptoms of MSG and excitotoxin poisoning http://saynotomsg.com/basics_symptoms.php

The Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the European Ramazzini Foundation has conducted
a long-term bioassay on aspartame (APM), a widely used artificial sweetener. APM was
administered with feed to 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats (100–150/sex/group), at concentrations
of 100,000, 50,000, 10,000, 2,000, 400, 80, or 0 ppm. The treatment lasted until natural
death, at which time all deceased animals underwent complete necropsy. Histopathologic evaluation
of all pathologic lesions and of all organs and tissues collected was routinely performed on
each animal of all experimental groups. The results of the study show for the first time that APM,
in our experimental conditions, causes a) an increased incidence of malignant-tumor–bearing animals
with a positive significant trend in males (p ≤ 0.05) and in females (p ≤ 0.01), in particular
those females treated at 50,000 ppm (p ≤ 0.01); b) an increase in lymphomas and leukemias with
a positive significant trend in both males (p ≤ 0.05) and females (p ≤ 0.01), in particular in
females treated at doses of 100,000 (p ≤ 0.01), 50,000 (p ≤ 0.01), 10,000 (p ≤ 0.05), 2,000
(p ≤ 0.05), or 400 ppm (p ≤ 0.01); c) a statistically significant increased incidence, with a positive
significant trend (p ≤ 0.01), of transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis and ureter and their
precursors (dysplasias) in females treated at 100,000 (p ≤ 0.01), 50,000 (p ≤ 0.01), 10,000
(p ≤ 0.01), 2,000 (p ≤ 0.05), or 400 ppm (p ≤ 0.05); and d) an increased incidence of malignant
schwannomas of peripheral nerves with a positive trend (p ≤ 0.05) in males. The results of this
mega-experiment indicate that APM is a multipotential carcinogenic agent, even at a daily dose of
20 mg/kg body weight, much less than the current acceptable daily intake. On the basis of these
results, a reevaluation of the present guidelines on the use and consumption of APM is urgent and
cannot be delayed. Key words: artificial sweetener, aspartame, carcinogenicity, lymphomas, malignant
schwannomas, rats, renal pelvis carcinomas. Environ Health Perspect 114:379–385 (2006).
