Title: How do you like your eggs?
Post by: Sassafras on October 21, 2006, 10:10:55 AM
(This was first written on Mar 21, 2005 on our Proboards site.)

I eat eggs for breakfast almost every morning. So, I know how I like them - whites done with the yoke still running so I can dip my toast. What I don't like is the whites not done. Sounds easy, right?

When I go to a resturant, it is not that easy at all. For a long time I could order my eggs over-easy, then it went to over-medium. For a while I was saying exactly what I wanted without using a discription or term - "I want my eggs with the whites done and the yoke runny." That only worked for a minute, because it totally irritated everyone, including Mick. "Just order the d**n things," he'd say. Now I order them over-medium-well. You would think that would take care of it, but it doesn't.

I don't complain anymore. Besides, it doesn't make any difference if I explain my egg preference in two words or two well-worded sentences... my eggs are still going to come what ever way they come.

I figure, there is no such thing anymore as over-easy, over-medium, and over-hard. There is, instead, over-light (which is slimy), over-something (which is somewhere in between), and over-done (which resembles a rock). But if those generalizations fail, it is then catagoried as not scrambled or poached. (This generaliztion works well when a pimple-faced, 17 year-old, nose-picker tries his/her hand at cooking instead of washing dishes.)  ::)

When we received our order at a very popular resturant near our home area, I wanted to know why my eggs were so under-cooked so I had our waitress explain it to me, and she said that my eggs were grill-fried.  ::) :o  There you go, another generalization.

So, how do you like your eggs?  ;)

warmly,

Sassafras

Yeah, i sometimes like to change up my eggs but like you said, no one ever seems to get it right anyway, so i just play it safe and go with "well done" or "scrambled well" because i don't want to get some nasty germs  :P

Lately, I have been finding that restaurants are using liquid eggs instead of REAL eggs.  Since I'm allergic to Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) I have to be very careful how I ask for scrambled eggs and then I have to check them when they reach my table.

So, if you want to make sure you're getting real eggs when ordering them scrambled, ask for "fresh eggs".  You may have to explain what it is you're looking for, but the conversation will at least get your waitress' or waiter's attention.

I'd like my eggs over-easy. If not they go back. O and by the way, toast should be toasted.

Who say's over medium? Over easy is/means whites done. Just ask Mick. He knows it's true. (3D)

I used to know, I think.  About two years ago, across the nation a memo must have went out that I didn't get because, all of a sudden, every waitress and short order cook in America says that medium means whites done.  Considering that I had been ordering eggs over easy for 45 years without a problem, it was a shock to me.  I am getting over it, I have quit arguing and I use this rule.  Over easy if I am ordering potatoes so I can mix them up and they will be gooey.  Over medium without potatoes since I don't want to look at the runny whites.

The world is changing, Smokebender, even as we breath.  The humanity of it all.

I understand what you say is true, but I'm pigheaded. I will stand fast. Over easy please.
