Title: STROKE IDENTIFICATION

STROKE IDENTIFICATION

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
I have done my part....will you

Mick, This post is very meaningful. I've read it before and forwarded it to others. I'm happy to do both again. Thanks.

Smoke and Mel, as you know it is a forwarded email, but I though I would post it here since this forum does get monitored by the web-crawlers and it will be picked up and the info just may save somebodies life.

I agree that this post may be helpful but what it fails to tell us is; What physical symptoms or actions expressed by the potential victim should prompt us to ask him these questions? Dizziness? headache? blurry eyesight? uncommon behavior? How will one know when to ask the questions?

I ask this because I have a history of problems with my teeth. I'm always getting an absessed tooth. I will take the recommended antibiotics until the symptoms are gone, but a few months to a year later it will happen again. For the past few years off and on, including the present, I experience a searing pain through the entire left side of my face. It begins with fluid retention in my gums, then will follow the vein up into my inner ear, then up into my temple. I feel the pressure on my temple as I write this. I feel no pain now, but the pressure is noticeable. I have gone to my doctor many times, but I have no swelling in my glands nor any redness in my inner ear. There is no infection, only the recurring pain and pressure of retained fluid flowing up the vein on the left side of my face. I massage it when I feel it puff up and that helps to drain the fluid. Could this also be a sign of stroke? I feel fine in other ways. I have no fever and the pain comes and goes. Right now it is dormant.
