New Product Labels to Read... Ibuprofen
« on: March 21, 2013, 02:29:58 AM »
When Mick and I were in Arizona, we ran out of ibuprofen, so I went to a Family Dollar and purchased a generic brand.  I buy only generic brands because, for example, Advil has a fake sugar coating and I can't take it without reacting to it.  I noticed I was getting some headaches after I took the new medication.  When I get a headache, I try to always find out what caused it.  I concluded that on some occasions I might have been able to associate the headaches with food or other chemical (e.g. I previously found a water-less handwash I severely reacted to), but I have also had problems in the past with medications like Advil and Aleve which is a GIANT MIGRAINE CAUSING MEDICATION, for me, 12 Hours after consumption.  So, the recently purchased ibuprofen was added to my list of possibilities.

Since we have been in Las Vegas, I have taken the same brand of ibuprofen and got another reaction.  Today, Mick and I were in Walmart, where I have gotten ibuprofen before, and I had no problems.  Having said that, if I didn't read the ingredients on the labels, I might have purchased the wrong medication, again.  READ EVERY LABEL!!!

Family Dollar's Family Wellness Ibuprofen

Ingredients:  carnauba wax, corn starch, fumes silica gel, hypromellose, lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polydextrose, polyethylene glycol, red iron oxide, sodium starch glycolate, stearic acid, titanium dioxide

Words in Bold: Have been proven to cause reactions in MSG-Sensitive people and need no additional explanation from me.
Words in Green:  Questionable
I, either, didn't Google the other ingredients, or I didn't find any information that would constitute explanation.

Fumes Silica Gel

These three words together DID NOT come up on any search of mine.  "Fumed Silica" and "Silica Gel" did, though.

Best Explanation, and the easiest to understand:

More Indepth, and almost upsetting because it's origin and purpose seems less "acceptable" that the first explanation:
Fumed Silica:
"Like silica gel, it serves as a desiccant.":

Even though there is no toxicity mentioned, I consider this on my Watch-List.  It's too close to plastic for me.

From Wikipedia:
"Hypromellose (INN), short for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used as an ophthalmic lubricant, as well as an excipient and controlled-delivery component in oral medicaments, found in a variety of commercial products.[1][2]"

Magnesium Stearate

More harm than good.  2nd site suggests this ingredient weakens your immune system.  The 3rd site suggests stearate  "may result in the nutrients not dissolving in the appropriate section of the intestines as intended."

Microcrystalline Cellulose

Another anti-caking agent.  This one comes from wood pulp.

Bold and Green, because it is my NEW INGREDIENT TO AVOID like the plague.  I found like information on a flock when I was researching pregelatinized starchwith.

Lets look up Starch in Wikipedia first.  Read the Hydrolysis section and Starch sugars.

"These starch sugars are by far the most common starch based food ingredient and are used as sweetener in many drinks and foods. They include:

o  Maltodextrin, a lightly hydrolyzed (DE 10–20) starch product used as a bland-tasting filler and thickener.

o  Various glucose syrups (DE 30–70), also called corn syrups in the US, viscous solutions used as sweeteners and thickeners in many kinds of processed foods.

o  Dextrose (DE 100), commercial glucose, prepared by the complete hydrolysis of starch.

o  High fructose syrup, made by treating dextrose solutions with the enzyme glucose isomerase, until a substantial fraction of the glucose has been converted to fructose. In the United States, high fructose corn syrup is the principal sweetener used in sweetened beverages because fructose has better handling characteristics, such as microbiological stability, and more consistent sweetness/flavor. One kind of high fructose corn syrup, HFCS-55, is typically sweeter than regular sucrose because it is made with more fructose, while the sweetness of HFCS-42 is on par with sucrose.[15][16]

o  Sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, erythritol, sorbitol, mannitol and hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, are sweeteners made by reducing sugars."

That is pretty much all the ingredients I found worth mentioning at this time.  With the list of all No-Nos and "keep your eye on these", I'm sure I don't have to try to convince you to READ THE LABELS ON EVERYTHING!!!

I am not going to list my finding here at this time, but ALL of Walmart's brand of Ibuprofen called Equate WERE NOT safe.  I picked out the one I thought was OK and after I try them I will let you guys know if I got a headache after using the medication.

READ LABELS, PEOPLE!!  Read them and familarize yourself with ingredients so you can do the research and ask questions and let other know what to avoid.  Together we can help each other out with finding what ingredients to eliminate from our diet, but it is totally up to YOU, the individual, to actually eliminate these harmful ingredients from your life.  These dangerous ingredients keep gaining in numbers and we have to stay informed of what these ingredients are.

Keep up the good fight, my friends!!!  We are in this together and we have to stick together so we can help others.  If there is an ingredient you've found that is suspicious or should be avoid at all causes, share it with us, PLEASE!!!!
